Brief History of the Cemetery

The first Butteville Cemetery was located closer to the town in 1836. In 1894 it was moved to its present location on land donated by A.E.M. Cone. Within the three acres, there are some people who are well known in Oregon History. Six close relatives of Daniel Boone are buried just inside the gate.  Alphonso Boone, Daniel’s grandson, founded Boones Ferry on the Willamette River near Wilsonville in 1846.  Francis X. Matthieu, with Etienne Lucier, at the meeting in Champoeg broke the tie vote which decided that Oregon should be part of the United States, instead of becoming part of Canada. He also had the first Trading Post in Butteville.
